Selling Your Junk Car

10 questions

Your vehicle’s value depends on its year, make, model, weight, condition, major components, title status, and current recycling-market conditions. The fastest way to get a real number is to request a free quote based on your specific vehicle.

Learn how Klein determines your offer →

Call Klein Recycling or complete the online quote form. Be ready to provide the vehicle’s year, make, model, location, condition, whether it runs, whether major components are present, and whether you have the title.

Yes. Requesting a quote is free, and there is no obligation to accept it.

No. You can review the offer and decide whether selling the vehicle to Klein is right for you.

Klein buys junk, wrecked, damaged, non-running, high-mileage, flood-damaged, salvage, and unwanted vehicles, including cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, buses, tractor-trailers, forklifts, excavators, dump trucks, other heavy equipment, and many commercial or fleet vehicles.

Yes. Many of the vehicles Klein purchases are not running. Tell us whether the vehicle starts, drives, rolls, steers, and brakes so the pickup can be planned correctly.

Yes. Klein purchases vehicles with collision damage, including vehicles that may be considered uneconomical to repair.

Yes. Flood damage does not automatically prevent a sale. Describe the damage and the vehicle’s present condition when requesting your quote.

Yes. Klein purchases many work vehicles, commercial vehicles, and fleet vehicles. For multiple vehicles, call to discuss the inventory, locations, access, and scheduling.

Klein serves communities across New Jersey. Availability and scheduling depend on the vehicle and location, so call even if your town is not yet listed on the website. Find your county or town →

Pricing & Offers

11 questions

11. How does Klein determine my offer?Klein evaluates the vehicle’s year, make, model, weight, condition, completeness, title status, major components, catalytic converter, location, and current recycling-market conditions. Accurate information helps produce an accurate offer.

Two vehicles can have different values because of differences in weight, condition, major components, model, title status, and current material markets. Each vehicle should be evaluated on its own facts.

Yes. Recycling-market prices change over time and can affect the value of the steel and other recoverable metals in a vehicle.

Yes. Vehicle weight is one of several important factors because heavier vehicles generally contain more recyclable material.

Yes. Whether the original catalytic converter is present can materially affect value. Tell Klein if it has been removed or replaced.

Yes. A vehicle missing major components generally has less value than a comparable complete vehicle. Klein may still buy it, but the offer will reflect its present condition.

Mileage may matter, but it is only one factor. For an end-of-life vehicle, completeness, condition, major components, weight, and current markets may be more important.

It can. The effect depends on the severity of the damage, the vehicle, and which major components remain present. Be specific about the damage when requesting the quote.

If the vehicle matches the information provided, the quoted amount should be the amount paid. If a material detail is different, such as missing major components or a substantially different condition. Klein will explain the issue before loading the vehicle. At that point you are not obligated to sell the vehicle.

Klein’s standard pickup is free within its service area. The offer should not be reduced by a surprise towing fee. Any unusual access or recovery conditions should be discussed before scheduling.

Klein buys the vehicle, provides the pickup, and processes it through its own operation. Instead of paying brokers and middlemen, Klein puts that value where it belongs—in your pocket.

Titles & Paperwork

13 questions

A properly assigned title is generally the clearest way to prove ownership and complete the transfer. Title requirements can depend on the vehicle and circumstances, so call Klein before scheduling if the title is missing, damaged, or not in your name.

Eligible New Jersey vehicle owners can request a duplicate title through the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. An in-person Vehicle Center appointment is generally the fastest route; see the resource guide later in this document.

An expired or missing registration does not necessarily prevent a sale, but Klein still needs acceptable proof of ownership and identification. Call with the details before pickup.

Plan to have a valid government-issued photo ID. Klein will confirm any additional documentation required for your specific transaction.

Complete the seller-assignment section exactly as directed, using the vehicle information and odometer information required by the document. Do not guess, erase, or use correction fluid; call Klein before signing if anything is unclear.

You will complete the documents needed to transfer ownership and document the transaction. The driver or Klein representative will explain the paperwork before the vehicle is loaded.

The required signatures can depend on how the owners’ names are joined on the title. Contact Klein before pickup so the title can be reviewed and the correct owners can be available.

Estate and survivorship transactions may require additional documents and, in some cases, an NJ MVC visit. Review the NJ MVC transfer-upon-death guidance and call Klein before scheduling.

Some transactions may be completed through a valid power of attorney or authorization that identifies the vehicle and the authority granted. Requirements vary, so Klein should review the situation before pickup.

Yes, provided the person completing the sale has authority and the required business ownership documents, identification, and title paperwork.

A lien generally must be satisfied or supported by acceptable lien-release documentation before ownership can be transferred. Contact the lienholder and Klein before arranging pickup.

Do not alter the title. The NJ MVC may require a corrected or replacement title. Call Klein first, then use the official MVC title-correction or duplicate-title process if necessary.

Yes, Klein will provide transaction documentation for your records.

04

Pickup & Towing

13 questions

Yes, standard pickup is free within Klein’s normal New Jersey service area. Explain any unusual access conditions when scheduling so the correct equipment can be sent.

Pickup timing depends on location, route availability, vehicle access, and demand. Pickups can be arranged within a 24- to 48-hour period. In some instances, the vehicles could be picked up on the same day. Call Klein to discuss scheduling.

Klein would always prefer the owner to be present during the vehicle pickup, because the titled owner will need to provide identification proving ownership, sign appropriate documents, and receive payment. Klein should confirm whether any properly documented alternate arrangements are permitted. If necessary, arrangements can be made to pick up a vehicle without the owners’ present, please contact Klein if this is an issue.

The driver confirms the vehicle and paperwork, completes the ownership-transfer process, provides payment under Klein’s policy, and loads the vehicle for transport.

That is usually not a problem. Tell Klein whether the vehicle rolls, steers, brakes, has keys, and can be reached safely by a tow truck.

Klein may still be able to pick up the vehicle. Describe the number and condition of the wheels and tires in advance so the driver arrives prepared.

Missing keys do not automatically prevent pickup. Tell Klein before scheduling because keys can affect access, steering, loading, and the equipment required.

Often yes, provided the owner has authority, and the driver has safe, legal access. Property-manager, shop, or lot authorization may be required.

Describe the driveway, garage, backyard, underground lot, gate, soft ground, low clearance, or blocked access when scheduling. Klein will determine whether the pickup is possible and what equipment is needed.

Remove personal belongings, toll tags, garage-door openers, documents, medications, child seats, electronics, and anything else you want to keep. Check the trunk, glove box, door pockets, console, and under the seats.

Yes. Remove the plates before the vehicle leaves. NJ MVC says plates no longer in use can be surrendered at an MVC agency or by mail; keep the surrender receipt.

No cleaning is required. Remove personal property and any loose trash or hazardous items that could interfere with safe handling.

Call Klein as soon as possible if plans change. Rescheduling depends on route availability, but advance notice helps avoid unnecessary delays.

05

Payment

6 questions

Klein’s stated process is cash payment at pickup, before the vehicle leaves the property, after the vehicle and documents are verified.

Klein pays you in cash, and if for any reason you want to be paid by check (maybe for security reasons or other reasons), Klein will work with you.

The Klein representative handling the pickup provides payment according to company policy after verifying the transaction.

Payment-name requirements depend on ownership and company policy. Confirm any alternate-payee request with Klein before pickup.

You should retain the payment record and transaction paperwork for your files. Klein will provide you with a bill of sale.

There should be no hidden towing charge or unexplained fee. A change should occur only when a material fact about the vehicle or pickup differs from what was provided, and the reason should be explained before loading.

06

Recycling Process

9 questions

The vehicle is transported to Klein Recycling’s Hillsborough facility and enters a managed recycling process that includes documentation, preparation, safe fluid removal, material recovery, metal processing, and responsible handling of remaining materials.

See the full recycling process →

Gasoline, oils, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and refrigerant require controlled handling. Removing them before metal processing helps protect workers, equipment, surrounding communities, and the environment.

The battery is removed from the vehicle and managed through an appropriate recycling or handling stream rather than entering the metal-processing system with the vehicle.

Recoverable ferrous metals such as steel and iron and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper are separated and sent into recycling markets for use as raw material in new products.

Responsible vehicle recycling recovers metals, conserves natural resources, reduces landfill disposal, and ensures automotive fluids and regulated materials are handled through proper procedures.

No. Klein is not a retail used-auto-parts business. The recycling-process content should not direct customers to Klein for used parts.

Klein describes itself as one of New Jersey’s longest-operating licensed metal recycling facilities. Final website copy should identify only licenses, permits, and regulatory claims that Klein can document and substantiate.

Klein follows established operating procedures and applicable local, state, and federal requirements from vehicle arrival through final processing. Its commitment includes safe material handling, responsible metal recovery, and protecting employees, customers, neighboring communities, and the environment.

Because Klein understands and manages the vehicle’s full recycling value, the company can evaluate the vehicle directly rather than pricing through unnecessary layers. Top Dollar Starts with Selling Direct.

Expanded New Jersey Vehicle Resources

9 questions

New Jersey has specific title and ownership-transfer requirements. The titled owner should complete the seller information on the title carefully and avoid erasures or alterations. Requirements can differ when there is a lien, a deceased owner, a business owner, Power of Attorney, or another special circumstance.

NJ MVC – Transferring Vehicle Ownership →

The paperwork depends on how the vehicle was titled and how the estate is being handled. A surviving co-owner, executor, administrator, or designated beneficiary may need different documents. Before scheduling pickup, confirm the ownership documents with Klein and follow the current NJ MVC instructions for the specific situation.

NJ MVC – Transferring Vehicle Ownership →

Possibly. New Jersey recognizes Power of Attorney in certain vehicle transactions, but the form and supporting documents must fit the transaction. Do not assume a general authorization is sufficient. Contact Klein before pickup and use the current MVC requirements for ownership transfers and Power of Attorney.

NJ MVC – Transferring Vehicle Ownership →

A lien can affect whether ownership can be transferred. If a lien is still shown on the title, you may need documentation showing that it has been satisfied or released. If the vehicle is financed, the lienholder may also be involved in obtaining a duplicate title. Confirm the status before pickup.

NJ MVC – Title, Lien & Ownership Information →

Klein can evaluate vehicles with salvage-title histories, but the paperwork must support a legal ownership transfer. New Jersey has separate procedures for salvage certificates and rebuilt vehicles, so call Klein with the exact title status before scheduling the sale.

NJ MVC – Salvage Vehicle Information →

An out-of-state title does not automatically prevent a sale, but ownership and signing requirements may differ. Tell Klein which state issued the title before pickup so the paperwork can be reviewed and any NJ MVC guidance can be identified.

NJ MVC – Titles & Vehicle Services →

Do not guess or sign documents you are unsure about. NJ MVC has an Improper Evidence of Ownership process and special-title procedures for certain situations. Contact Klein first, then use the official MVC instructions to determine what documentation is required.

NJ MVC – Title & Ownership Information →

Use the official NJ MVC forms library rather than relying on an old downloaded copy. Forms and procedures can change, so the live MVC source is the best place to obtain the current version.

These resources are designed to help New Jersey vehicle owners replace a title, prepare paperwork, and handle license plates. Government procedures, fees, forms, and links can change; the published webpage should link to the official NJ MVC source and show a “last reviewed” date.

How Do I Get a Replacement Title in New Jersey?

A title generally makes the ownership transfer simpler and may help you receive the strongest offer for your vehicle. The NJ MVC says the best way to request a duplicate title is to schedule an appointment at a Vehicle Center. Some situations can be handled by mail, but mail processing may take 8 to 12 weeks.

Recommended:

Apply at an MVC Vehicle Center

  1. Schedule a duplicate-title appointment at an NJ MVC Vehicle Center.
  2. Complete the Universal Title Application (form OS/SS-UTA), available online or at MVC agencies.
  3. Bring a current or expired registration, proof of insurance, or a certified registration record.
  4. Bring the damaged title if you are replacing a damaged document.
  5. Pay the current $60 duplicate-title fee. NJ MVC lists cards, check, money order, and cash as accepted at agencies.

Mail Option When There Is No Proof of Ownership

NJ MVC provides a mail-only packet for certain duplicate-title requests where proof of ownership is unavailable. The packet includes the applicable no-proof-of-ownership form and Universal Title Application. Include the current fee by check or money order payable to NJMVC and retain a complete copy.

How Do I Sign My Vehicle Title Over?

Before signing, confirm that the title is the current original and review the seller-assignment area carefully. Complete the required seller information exactly, use the correct odometer disclosure where applicable, and avoid erasures, strikeouts, correction fluid, or handwritten changes that could invalidate the document.

1. Locate the current original title and confirm the VIN matches the vehicle.
2. Confirm which titled owner or owners must sign.
3. Complete the seller-assignment and odometer fields required by the title.
4. Do not sign incomplete or blank transfer documents.
5. Bring a valid photo ID and any registration or ownership documents Klein requested.
6. Keep your transaction paperwork and payment record.

What Should I Do with My License Plates?

Remove New Jersey license plates before the vehicle is towed. NJ MVC allows plates no longer in use to be surrendered in person at an MVC agency or by mail. Keep the surrender receipt in your records.
